In this iteration I added multiple layers of chipboard and extended the folds of the component pieces to create a deep overlap.
The crude dowel connections have been replaced with with even cruder paper clamps.
I'm wondering about the geometry of the components. I know the size of the openings is going to vary based on an attractor script, but regardless, they appear a little out of place??

Harsh criticism is desired!!

Progress?

This one is a little more interesting. The dowels are crude representations of what will be finely crafted connection elements. I like the contrast of the chipboard and the components. I want to explore that further.

I'm having a tough time aligning my "personal convictions" within the organizing elements of the enclosure system. I believe that's partially because I'm not sure I have a complete vision of what those are.
I think what I'm after is a notion of co- dependence. However, this particular specimen clearly fails in that regard.

HouMinn

The lecture this afternoon by HouMinn could be good. They're from Minneapolis and do prototype work with an emphasis on energy innovation. This photo is their Drape Wall.

Here's their description: 

"HouMinn practice is the result of a decidedly non-practice AND non-academic approach to research and design. Instead, it represents a third approach, one distinguished by three key characteristics that are atypical to both a traditional design firm and a traditional university. These are: first, a slow, evolutionary approach to academic design and research, second, the involvement of interdisciplinary collaborators, and third, an investment in the act of making."

Proto-dynamist

Uploaded a banner for our blog. I'm not totally satisfied with it and may change it later in the semester. Suggestions welcomed.

Some thoughts about the reading from The Future and its Enemies. Both Postrel, and Kyle in his comment, say that our government today is driven by technocratic methods. I agree with this assessment, but it also brings to mind the proto-dynamist mindset of the Founding Fathers, who set up a flexible structure that allowed for change, growth and individual representation. 

Also, Powell's Books (best bookstore ever) has copies of The Future and its Enemies for two bucks. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Frozen in Motion

After hearing Kyle wax philosophic about condensation freezing, I thought about other similar conditions and found this image. I hope to incorporate into my project buckling and overlapping such as conveyed in this image.

Emergent Construction

I guess I'll start the questions...

After Thursday's discussions about class projects, I've been wondering about the implications of components driving a design. If a component is designed, and then another different component is designed (in the same "language" as the first), and so on until the whole project is completed, is it possible to begin some fabrication of certain component elements ahead of time - as is often necessary - or does every second stage have to wait until the first is done? I can understand how a design might progress this way, but can an entire building project be conceived of in the same emergent way?

here's a few images that i'm using as inspiration right now... the modules that are created by amethyst allow for structural stability. Additionally, the morphing of the individual components allows the structure to turn corners and complete surfaces... these images are basically the model we need to create... sweet.
... now if only i knew how to make these modular units.... i think i can create a u-shaped clip that will lend itself as a secondary connection system.
..wonder what i'll be doing this spring break...

Although firmly rooted in the spirit of computer aided digital fabrication, the lack of available equipment necessitated the need for an intermediary step involving both human cut and human fabricated building components a [a process commonly known as using laser eyes and laser arms]. As is illustrated by early design mockups, these components were crude, and often lacked durability and functionality. A combination physical and digital refinement yielded the final building partially pictured above.

Welcome To Your Blog

The blog is up and everyone that provided an email has been invited to join as an author. A few things of note, the blog is setup to be private, which means that we, the authors, are the only people able to view the page and post. It should not appear in search results and if it did it would not allow access to non-authors.

I think Kyle plans on incorporating the blog into a few activities. I also plan on posting some of my in-progress studio work with the hopes that I will get feedback from everyone else, but if I don't that's okay, I'll just be sad. I will be trying to catch up with work over the break and this could be a good place for communication while we are away from studio. There has to be about a million other ways to use the space too.

If we need a name change or a subtitle rewrite initiate a change. That goes for anything.

Thanks to Cassie in advance for designing our 'rockin' header, Ted for advising, and Kyle for integrating this experiment on the fly.
